About us
Feed Your Way Birmingham is a city-wide initiative created alongside local families to support parents in every part of their feeding journey. Whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or using a mix of both, this campaign brings trusted information, resources, and services together in one place.
We’re working hand in hand with families, health professionals, businesses, and employers to make Birmingham an inclusive, breastfeeding-friendly city where every parent feels informed, supported, and confident in their choices.
After speaking with real families across the city, some of the key findings included: v
- Stigma and judgment around public breastfeeding discouraged many mothers, while supportive peer networks and visible breastfeeding in public were seen as positive influences.
- Barriers included a lack of support services for the early challenges of breastfeeding. Other barriers included insufficient workplace accommodations for breastfeeding mothers returning to work.
- Mothers often lacked knowledge about breastfeeding techniques and baby cues, leading to challenges like latching issues and low milk supply.
- Younger mothers were less aware about the benefits of breastmilk for both mum and baby.
Visions & goals
- Considering our research findings, we were able to develop Feed Your Way Birmingham with clear goals in mind:
- To encourage positive attitudes and challenge negative attitudes towards breastfeeding.
- To increase support for breastfeeding in public and in the workplace.
- To increase awareness of the value of breastfeeding and normal baby behaviour.
- To support the expansion of the focus on Birmingham becoming a more ‘breastfeeding-friendly’ place to live and work.
